How many of us "volunteered" for a Board position? Or raised our hand to serve? And then had absolutely NO CLUE what we'd signed up for?
We can all put our hands down now because in my experience, it's almost everyone.
At ATD's Annual Leadership Conference in New Orleans (ALC'24), I delivered a session on "Why a Board Orientation is Worth Your Time" and I think I scared the crap out of a few people. They didn't know what they'd accidentally gotten themselves into. That's ok, that's why I created my presentation!
We discussed the legal responsibilities, the ethical duties, and how to keep a chapter going because, at the end of the day, the chapter IS a business. We talked through the governance requirements, the documents that need to be in place and maintained to keep a chapter in good standing. And we talked through succession planning and how to avoid the pitfalls of not having prepared Board members.
I'm happy to talk to anyone about this because this information is necessary stuff!
