When it comes to deciding which process improvement methodology to use, you have choices. At one time, it was thought that each method was interchangeable with each other but that's not entirely accurate because each has a purpose and a place.
Lean
Six Sigma
Lean Six Sigma
TQM (Total Quality Management)
TPS (Toyota Production System aka Just-In-Time)
Theory of Constraints
Having followed/used most of these methodologies over the years, I can say that at their core, they are nearly identical. However, the differences are what make each work for different situations or for pursuing different goals. For example, if your goal is to reduce waste in a given process, Lean Six Sigma will work better than TQM which works best for continuous improvement initiatives. Here's a really handy run-down of each.
